JESUS the HARD WORKER: “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work” (Jn 4:34). No one could deny the prodigious work of William Carey in India, following his Master’s example. Among many other accomplishments, the English cobbler left behind a translation of the Bible in every major language of the Indian subcontinent. He became a missionary, he said, “because I could not say, No.” He once remarked to his nephew, Eustace Carey, “If, after my removal, anyone should think it worth the while to write my life, I will give you a criterion by which you may judge of its correctness. If he gives me credit for being a plodder, he will describe me justly. Anything beyond this will be too much.” It was said of him when he arrived in India: education, minimal; degrees, none; savings, depleted; political influence, nil. And what were his resources? A weapon, love; a desire, to bring the light of God into the darkness; a strategy, to proclaim the unsearchable riches of Christ.
