CHRIST the CLEANER: “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean” (Mt 8:2). How this world needs a good cleaning, the kind that only Jesus can give! Percy Ainsworth (1873-1909) was a devoted minister of the gospel in Manchester, England. Though he died of typhoid fever at just 36 years of age, he left many fragrant memories in his saintly life. His younger brother, heading home one evening, passed by a squalid area of town. What was his surprise to see his brother standing before a decrepit building, a stiff brush and sponge in his hands. He stopped in amazement, and called out, “Percy, what on earth are you doing?” Ainsworth explained that he had passed that area earlier in the day and noticed some foul graffiti painted on that building, in full view of the main thoroughfare. He went home and tried to forget them, but couldn’t. Impressionable lives would see them and he couldn’t rest until he had returned to scrub them clean. “I am willing,” said Jesus, “be cleansed.”
