JESUS the I AM: “If you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins” (Jn 8:24). Fifteen hundred years before, Moses inquired as to the name he should use to identify to Pharoah the God he represented. “I AM,” said the Lord. “I AM THAT I AM” (Ex 3:14). Illustrated by the bush on fire that did not burn, God needs nothing outside of Himself to sustain Him. It is from Him that all good flows. With this backdrop, a carpenter from Nazareth declared, “Before Abraham was, I AM” (Jn 8:58). As source and sustainer of living, “I AM the Bread of Life” (Jn 6:35). As revealer and illuminator of truth, “I AM the Light of the World” (Jn 9:5). As the only guide safely home, “I AM the Good Shepherd” (Jn 10:11). As the ultimate place of safety, “I AM the Door” (Jn 10:9). As victor over the Last Enemy, “I AM the Resurrection & the Life” (Jn 11:25). As the secret of fruitful living, “I AM the true Vine” (Jn 15:1). And as the only path that reaches God, “I am the Way” (Jn 14:6).
