CHRIST CONSIDERED FOOLISHNESS: “We preach Christ crucified,…to the Greeks foolishness” (1 Cor 1:23). “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing…” (v 18). H.A. Ironside writes: “I was on a ferry going from Oakland to San Francisco with a group of Christians. Among us was a dear friend who played a concertina. Our group sat in one corner and he played, and we joined in singing.…We were all enjoying the singing, till a man came up in a perfect rage, and said, ‘What do you mean, you fools, singing religious hymns here on the ship?’ My friend, an Irishman, jumped right up and said, ‘We are fools for Christ’s sake; whose fool are you?’” The Bible presents many kinds of fools: opinionated fools (Prov 12:15), mocking fools (14:9), slandering fools (10:18), unteachable fools (1:7), and atheistic fools (14:1), to name a few. But “We are fools for Christ’s sake” (4:10), willing to identify publicly with the One who, at Calvary, publicly identified with us.
