CHRIST the SUPREME OFFERING: “Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God” (Eph 5:2). Leonard Sheldrake tells a story from the days when a plastic coin called a mill was used with purchases during rationing. One rolled at his feet at a bus stop, and he worked his way through the crowd to the man who dropped it. “Thanks for a tenth of a cent,” the man said. “You don’t meet many folks thankful for such a little thing,” Sheldrake replied. “Undoubtedly you’re thankful for greater things, too.” “For example?” “Did you ever hear of the Lord Jesus?” “Yes. Who hasn’t?” “Well, you know He died on the cross for the sins of the whole world—for yours and mine. I never knew that till a few years ago, and I thanked Him and trusted Him for salvation. Now a man like you who would give thanks for a mill certainly would thank God for His Son. When did you do that?” I’ll never forget the look he gave me as he boarded the bus, Sheldrake wrote. “Neither were thankful.”
