“For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman…which things are symbolic” (Gal 4:22, 24).
The contrast between Ishmael and Isaac is used in the New Testament to teach us that we need not live as slaves; we are children who should live in liberty, for Christ has made us free.
