August 25 Petition Mission

“Accept, I pray, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O Lord…” (Ps 119:108). Hosea calls them “the calves of our lips” (14:2). Why the NKJV changes the Hebrew par (meaning “calf” or “young bull”) to “sacrifice” is beyond me. A similar idea is found in Hebrews 13:15, “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.”

What beautiful pictures! See the grateful Israeli farmers wending their way to Jerusalem with “the precious fruits brought forth by the sun” (Deut 33:14, KJV) to offer them in thanksgiving to the Lord. Now see believers today—like you and me—offering, wherever they are, the “freewill offerings” of their mouths, the “calves” and “fruit” of their lips brought forth by the Son.

Let’s take breaks from our daily tasks, a minute here or there, and “let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God.” The world isn’t afraid to praise its stars and sing its songs. So then: “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so” (Ps 107:2).
