JESUS the GIFT: “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son…” (1 Jn 4:10). Lyman Abbott tells of a missionary from India who recounted how she went with another lady to a low-caste Hindu village. The women were sitting in a circle on the ground. “My sister said to them, ‘God is love, and God loves you.’ One woman asked, ‘What is love?’ Just think of it—a woman asking, What is love! The sister turned to me and said, ‘What can I do when women don’t know what love is?’ I replied, ‘Ask them how they feel towards their children.’ So turning to one poor woman, rocking her baby in her arms, she said, ‘How do you feel towards your baby?’ The woman said, ‘I am a poor woman; how can I tell how I feel?’ ‘I’m sure you know. What do you feel?’ The mother replied, ‘I feel a kind of going out of my heart to my baby.’ ‘Yes,’ said the sister, ‘that’s it! And God feels a kind of going out of His heart to you, too, and has proved it by giving us His Son.’”
