December 14 Petition Mission

“O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You” (2 Chron 20:12).

Jehoshaphat gets down to basics here! We have no power to stand against the foe, and we have no idea what to do. No resource and no recourse—except one: “Our eyes are upon You.” This is a prayer request stripped of everything else. When we don’t know what to ask, or what to do, at least, like the little helpless children we are, we can just look to our Father, expecting Him to have what we need and to know what to do.

Do you know what the answer was in this case? Nothing, but God! “You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you” (v 17). And they went into battle, singing the victory song (v 21). Is that just an Old Testament story? No, here’s our song: “Thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ” (2 Cor 2:14)!
